Hello There, sorry I missed this. Havent been checking this email since
recovering from our fundraiser ( it went well :) ))

Looked at the pics and suspect a window strike or other trauma. If it can be
captured I would certainly be happy to look at it

Helene

I know this is a bit late (I've been in Cape Breton and unable to check my
e-mail for the last couple of days) but I'm curious about the outcome for
this blue jay. Did it get taken to a rehab centre, Bernie?

I work at the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, which deals mainly
with birds, and I've never seen anything like this before. I would imagine
it was caused by an injury to the jaw, such as a fracture or a dislocation.
Perhaps it hit a window and injured itself that way? I don't know of any
diseases that could cause this. I'll talk to Helene and see if she has any
other ideas. Looks like the wings are drooping a bit, too, which makes me
think the bird has been doing poorly for some time. Was it still able to
fly?

And Eleanor, birds will often hold their beaks open wide when they feel
too warm. Birds don't have sweat glands, so opening the mouth and panting is
one of the best ways they can lose heat, just like it is for dogs. That's
probably what the bird you saw was doing, since it appeared healthy and was
able to use its beak normally.

  All
I just had a Blue Jay around my deck which appears to be unable to close
its beak, like its jaw is locked open. Initially I thought it was just
trying to cool off, but it clearly makes an attempt at peanuts and such but
cannot pick them up, or at least hold onto them. I did observe it trying to
drink from my small deck pond. I was wondering if anyone is aware of such an
ailment. It was hanging around very close to me as if it was desperate for
assistance.
