Hi Patricia,

'Anting' behaviour by birds is well known and described for many species. It is generally thought that the formic acid found in ant species acts as an anti-parasite/anti-fungal agent. Often the formic acid is 'extracted' from the ant by the bird actively rubbing the insect over it's feathers. In this case it sounds like the crow was also having a small snack while it waited.

All the best,

Lance

Hi,

Has anyone heard of this? One of the resident crows here this morning was squirming with wings flattened out on the ground, flicking its body and wings, pecking at its chest - all the while sitting on an ant bed, eating ants at the same time. It would then get up and stand and still eat ants.
