Thanks for sending this, Pat and Barb. You may know that Mark
Elderkin (now of N.S. Dept. of Nat. Resources in Kentville Wildlife
Division), in collaboration with Bernard Forsythe and his nest-boxes,
studied barred owls and their reproduction and diet back in the 1980s
or early 1990s? for a Master's degree in Biology at Acadia Univ. His
thesis can be viewed in the Acadia Biology Dept. The diet was shown
to be extremely varied and opportunistic, and their foods varied from
small mammals through many species of small to medium-sized birds to
snakes to frogs and salamanders to fishes (including tagged salmon
smolts) to insects like ground beetles and to invertebrates like
earthworms. I may have left something out here, and perhaps Mark can
correct or add to my list.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
