Becky and all - Lillian Perry and I were atlassing in Upper Clyde on Saturday, June 12th. As we were driving the dirt road towards Cobscotch Falls ( between point counts 17 and 7) 20T0298598 and 4861345 (my GPS not very accurate- 46 m) we heard a loud chattery call. The sound was much larger than what would be made by a startled thrush. We stopped immediately. The caller had flown down to a tall stump so I got out to ID it. I could hardly believe my eyes - a Great Crested Flycatcher so near the road. The bird flew back to a low branch on a tall pine tree but did not fly away when Lillian got out to see it. It flew back again to the meter tall stump which was about six metres from us! It then flew calling to a very near, low maple branch over a small well-flowing brook. A second bird then flew in from the same area near the stump, and sat on the branch right below the first bird. When we went for a camera, one bird flew just a short way up stream and the other flew to a nearby tree, so we left, believing that the birds may have been nesting. I did not see any cavity in any near-by tree. ( I remember the pair that nested in Waverley a few years ago were quite high off the ground.) It was a life bird for Lillian, and a first in Shel County for me. Cheers, Joan
