I've been seeing a chickadee at my feeder which has a paler cap than a
Black-capped Chickadee (BCCH), but not brown like the Boreal's (BOCH). The
sides are buffy, and the face grayer, both like a BOCH.

As luck would have it, two grad students from the lab of a colleague in
Lethbridge were out catching chickadees, among other birds (they're
currently in Newfoundland pursuing them there). We did manage to catch the
potential hybrid, and took some pictures (no, I don't have them
yet...patience please), and importantly, a few precious microlitres of
blood. The blood sample will not only tell us if there is mixed parentage,
but which parent was which species. However, those samples won't be run
until later in the summer.

So, no pictures, no molecular results, just a report. For now.

Randy
