  In hydrangeas, I think the blue flower colour indicates acidic pH? vs. more alkaline conditions for the whitish flowers?  Would that fit with what David mentioned below regarding wood ash being added where the pink flowers of bugle are now?  Cheers from Jim in Wolfville

       The Bugle (Ajuga reptans) on the lawn this year ranges in color from deep blue (usual) to pink (unique to this year & localized).


       The large Bumble Bees who work this plant seem to be color-blind but the pink blossoms (if I remember correctly that the pink area had wood ash applied this year)  suggest that Bugle blossom color is dependent on available Al; deep blue if high, pink if low.


       Does anyone recall the term for plants with Al-conditional flower color ?
