This morning on the 09:15 ferry for the LaHave River=2C we were half way ac=
ross when I noticed a bird flying down the river. My first impression was =
of a tern and I noted that it was very dark. The bird was of the size of a=
black tern. I grabbed my binoculars and it continued to come closer. The=
wing beats were slow. The bird was chocolate brown and had a white band a=
bout 4-5 inches wide above the tail. The bill was that of a petrel. It fl=
ew to within four feet of the ferry before swinging around the front of it =
and heading towards Bayport. After much speculation I think that a possibi=
lity of a band-rumped storm petrel can be ruled out. The band did not exte=
nd down below the tail. The ferry man recognized the bird as a Carry's chi=
cken. I spoke to another later in the day and am told that with the right =
winds they regularly see petrels on the river. I never would have suspecte=
d this. So the verdict is Leaches Storm Petrel. I guess I've just never s=
een one up close and personal like that before.
