Hi all
On Friday evening May 14, Rick Ferguson and I ran our third and final owl route, route # 1, near Tony Mills, Pictou Co. En route to the start point, we did a little atlassing along the Caribou Ferry Rd. and we heard a VIRGINIA RAIL calling from the cattail marsh along with a couple of Sora. The Virginia was a new species for that square although they have been found there in previous years before the atlas. I did not have it there on Migration Count day although the Soras were there then.
Weatherwise, it was a great evening for an owl survey and we felt maybe we might good results as at our first stop after the second Barred Owl call, we had a Barred Owl float without a sound towards us from up the road and perch beside the vehicle. It did not make a sound.
We ended up with owls at all 10 stops for a total of 26 owls! Our totals included 19 Barred Owls, 4 Great Horned Owls and 3 Northern Saw-whet Owls. I never thought it would be possible so many owls would be encountered in a survey route. We felt one of the Great Horned Owls was a repeat caller, but still a very exhilarating night and more than makes up for years on other routes when no owls were heard.
We heard peepers at every stop, 1 Wood Frog, 2 Ovenbirds, 1 Hermit Thrush and 3 White-throated Sparrow including one with a crisp, spirited rendition of its song at midnight.
We had 4 American Woodcock at the first 2 stops, and a total of 3 Wilson's Snipe. What an amazing night!
cheers
Ken
