I did a late-season Nocturnal Owl survey last night, on Hwy 357 north of
Musquodoboit Harbour. Ended up seeing and/or hearing 7 Barred Owls spread
throughout the route. Most didn't make any noise/become visible until the
Barred Owl playback started. Most who responded were close when the
playback started, though, suggesting that perhaps the Boreal Owl playback
had drawn them closer to the car. One pair stayed distant and simply
returned calls after hearing the playback.

Nice evening to be out--calm and mostly clear skies, and the 357 was pretty
quiet in terms of traffic after the first stop or two. In addition to the
owls, I heard Wood Frog ( at a couple of stops), Peepers (at every stop),
one American Woodcock, a couple White Throated Sparrow singing in the dark,
Hermit Thrush singing just before dusk, and perhaps a Snipe at one of the
late stops (it was distant so I wasn't sure).
