Good morning, all. This morning, I spent from about 7:30 to 9:30 at Conrad's Beach in Lawrencetown - you know - the one with the "unsafe" boardwalk that everyone and his dog walk over daily. I think "unsafe structure" is government-speak for something that bounces and creaks when you walk on it, while they apparently don't have the money to fix it. A new Piping Plover caution sign has been there for a couple of weeks, just as you come down onto the beach from the boardwalk, and there are also more signs down the beach to the west, almost to where the summer homes are accessible from West Lawrencetown Road. But this morning, I saw a single Piping Plover on the beach to the east of the boardwalk, about a quarter of the way to Fox Point. While walking along the path to return to the parking area, I saw a medium-sized dog-like animal I took to be a coyote. While domestic dogs will bark, or approach you, or run and play with the owner not far off, this one merely noticed me, turned tail and ran off, intent on getting out of sight as fast as possible, which it did successfully. I saw nothing more of it. At least one other person was on the beach at that time, walking a dog. Perhaps she will post a comment. As well, I saw a large hawk. I don't think it was a Harrier, which I have seen there many times. I wonder if it might have been a Broad-Winged or ??? It was flying away from me over the dunes, and then continued west past the boardwalk and on in the direction of West Lawrencetown Road. cheers, Bob Lindsay Dartmouth
