Hi All; Four of us took a walk in the Hfx Public Gardens around 1300 hours, after a lovely brunch, and Martine spotted one of the Eastern Kingbirds hawking insects over the main pond in the gardens. There was no evidence of a second bird. We also talked at length with one the commissionairs, who is interested in the bird life of the park, and has promised to keep an eye out for anything unusual. He informed us that the main pond had been cleared of its population of introduced carp and goldfish thanks to the enthusiastic fishing last year of a couple of Double-crested Cormorants. With the carp gone the pond has become much more clear, and cattails have self-seeded, insects are appearing, and the pond is looking much healthier. And the ducks might find shelter for their ducklings, which the latter need, as gulls have eaten every duckling in recent years. There is also, at the main pond, one Black Duck that has become a pretty proficient diving duck. Cheers, Blake
