It is possible to buy bear spray in Nova Scotia but you may be questioned by
the supplier to explain your need for the product before they sell it to
you. This has been my experience.

Documents of the NS Dept of Natural Resources promote using "pepper spray"
if attacked by a bear. The documents by the Nova Scotia government on bear
attacks and nuisance bears can be found at:
http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/wildlife/conserva/bear-attacks.asp and
http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/wildlife/nuisance/WhenBearsBaN.pdf. I have found
the web pages of the North American Bear Center as an excellent resource in
understanding the behaviour of black bears (http://www.bear.org/website/)

Just curious as to where it is written that it is illegal to carry bear
spray in NS to defend oneself against attacking animals? You can buy it
here.

Thanks,

We have been spending time in BC, Alberta, Yukon and Alaska many times
(going again in a few weeks) and one of the first things we buy, before
heading for the wilderness, is bear spray. It is not a "cure all" but I feel
a lot better carrying it! And guess what, it's illegal in NS!

Hi Randy,

I spoke to a lady a couple of summers ago, near Middleton, who was attacked
from behind on a trail in the Annapolis Valley. The bear was on her before
she even knew it was present. She managed to escape with minor injuries.

The cavalier attitude by some Nova Scotian's towards bears will lead to
disaster, sooner or later.

All,

I don't believe there have ever been any deaths associated with bear attacks
in NS, but have there been any non-lethal attacks? And by "non-lethal
attack" I don't mean someone just being followed or even charged, I mean
physical contact whether it be considered a mauling or not.

Thank you,

Randy
