Actually, when my kids were younger there was a bear around that had no fear
of people. I contacted DNR regarding this bear. My concern was that my
kids had to walk 250 feet down my driveway, into our house which is
surrounded by trees.they could have walked into a bear at any time.actually,
the way my property is laid out, I could step out my door and mama bear
could be on the level above me, and babies could be on another level below
me.tricky! All I was told was to make sure my garbage was in a wooden bin
(which it was) and to not BBQ, as that would attract them. Should I stumble
upon a bear, I was to make myself as large as possible by raising my arms,
and slowly back away from it.right! Can you imagine a child doing that? I
would be terrified to come across a bear.I can't imagine how a child would
feel! At the time there were 25 children within a 2 mile radius of where
this bear had been spotted. DNR said if they set a trap for him, it would
just attract more bears to the area, and they're probably right. The girl I
work with has a son about 10, very small for his age, and he was walking up
the long lane to his house and came across a bear. He is now terrified to
get off the bus.his parents had to make arrangements to have someone meet
him every day after school.

Hi Randy,

I spoke to a lady a couple of summers ago, near Middleton, who was attacked
from behind on a trail in the Annapolis Valley. The bear was on her before
she even knew it was present. She managed to escape with minor injuries.

The cavalier attitude by some Nova Scotian's towards bears will lead to
disaster, sooner or later.

Hans

Subject: [NatureNS] bear attacks in NS

All,

I don't believe there have ever been any deaths associated with bear attacks
in NS, but have there been any non-lethal attacks? And by "non-lethal
attack" I don't mean someone just being followed or even charged, I mean
physical contact whether it be considered a mauling or not.

Thank you,

Randy
