Last Monday (April 26), I checked out these woods hoping for a few
spring arrivals.
- a Blue-headed Vireo was singing with little enthusiasm.
- 6-8 Winter Wrens were heard in a small patch of woods. These will
spread out and most move on shortly, I expect.
- many Y/R Warblers.
- 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch. Since the apparent die-off 6-7 years ago,
this species has been scarce in these parts. Before that they were
numerous, found most everywhere. We had several coming to our feeders
and a pair nested on our property. Now a few White-breasted Nuthaches
but no Red-breasted. This may be just a local happening?
- a few Hermit Thrushes
- Chickadees numerous. It seems the West Nile Virus has not affected
their numbers around here.
- Swamp Sparrows in typical habitat
- No sign of the Phoebes (reported by Andy D.)

Today (April 2):
- a Blue-headed Vireo in full song (likely the same one). What pure notes!
- only 1 Winter Wren and none in the area so many were last week.
- 1 Northern Waterthrush
- 2 Wilson's Snipe...appeared to be competing with their winnowing.
- Y/R Warblers still numerous.
- a few Purple Finches singing
- a fellow I met on the trail asked me about a large hawk he had seen
several times perched. He suggested a Goshawk to which I agreed. Will
have to check more closely during breeding season.
- again could not find the Phoebe pair. Have found a few others in
the Coldbrook area.
