Hi all
Make your contribution to nature in NS by attending these talks and =
participating in the projects. Also keep in mind, this is the final year =
for the Maritime Breeding Bird Atlas. Already some early nesters have =
young and many squares are waiting for more info to be tallied to =
brighten up the maps.. Check-out =
http://www.mba-aom.ca/english/index.html for more info.=20
cheers
Ken

Tues. May 4
Pictou Co. Naturalists Club 7 p.m. New Glasgow Library
This month's talk will be "Piping Plovers in Nova Scotia: What we know =
and don't know, and why there's hope for recovery". Guest speaker, Sue =
Abbott, has worked for over ten years on bird monitoring, research and =
conservation projects - from seabirds to shorebirds to songbirds. =
Understanding the effects of human disturbance on birds and habitats and =
using outreach as a tool to mitigate this threat are two common threads =
that link much of her past and present work. Sue is a program =
coordinator for Bird Studies Canada, a national non-profit dedicated to =
increasing the appreciation, understanding and conservation of Canada's =
birds. She currently coordinates the Piping Plover Conservation Program =
and the Important Bird Area Program in Nova Scotia Non-members are =
welcome to attend these friendly, informal meetings. Meetings are held =
the first Tuesday of each month unless otherwise noted.=20

Sat. May 8

Attention birdwatchers, it will soon be time for the Nova Scotia =
Migration Count held Saturday May 8th this year. Anyone is welcome to =
join in, all you need is confidence in identifying the species you =
report. Chris Pepper, cpepper@ymail.com , is the new provincial =
coordinator. Ken McKenna kenmcken@eastlink.ca will be guiding the Pictou =
Co. section.=20
Contact Chris to find out coordinators for other counties.=20

Tues. May 18
A Bonus presentation for the Pictou Co. Naturalists Club for May 7 p.m. =
New Glasgow Library
Are you interested in butterflies? Do you want to make a significant =
contribution to a real conservation effort? If you answered yes to =
either of these questions then you'll be interested in the Maritime =
Butterfly Atlas (MBA), a five-year initiative to better document all the =
butterfly species that occur in the Maritimes. Modeled in part after the =
Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas, the MBA relies on the observations of =
volunteer naturalists like yourself. Once complete it will provide =
distributional and abundance information on all Maritime butterfly =
species, information that will be used to identify species of =
conservation concern and inform future conservation decisions. John =
Klymko, the director of the MBA, will briefly discuss the butterflies of =
Nova Scotia then introduce the MBA, which is in its first year. He will =
outline how to participate in the Atlas, including how to submit =
observations in the form of specimens and photographs. Atlas kits, =
including a net and other necessary equipment, will be provided to those =
who want to participate. There is no participation fee, though donations =
will be accepted for the Atlas kits." John Klymko is the zoologist at =
the Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre in Sackville, and is =
leading the Maritimes Butterfly Atlas and several other projects related =
to dragonflies, butterflies, bees and flower flies=
