Guest speaker, Sue = Abbott, has worked for over ten years on bird monitoring, research and = conservation projects - from seabirds to shorebirds to songbirds. = Understanding the effects of human disturbance on birds and habitats and = using outreach as a tool to mitigate this threat are two common threads = that link much of her past and present work. Sue is a program = coordinator for Bird Studies Canada, a national non-profit dedicated to = increasing the appreciation, understanding and conservation of Canada's = birds. She currently coordinates the Piping Plover Conservation Program = and the Important Bird Area Program in Nova Scotia Non-members are = welcome to attend these friendly, informal meetings. Meetings are held = the first Tuesday of each month unless otherwise noted.=20 Sat. Naturalists Club for May 7 p.m. = New Glasgow Library Are you interested in butterflies? Do you want to make a significant = contribution to a real conservation effort? If you answered yes to = either of these questions then you'll be interested in the Maritime = Butterfly Atlas (MBA), a five-year initiative to better document all the = butterfly species that occur in the Maritimes. Modeled in part after the = Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas, the MBA relies on the observations of = volunteer naturalists like yourself. Once complete it will provide = distributional and abundance information on all Maritime butterfly = species, information that will be used to identify species of = conservation concern and inform future conservation decisions. John = Klymko, the director of the MBA, will briefly discuss the butterflies of = Nova Scotia then introduce the MBA, which is in its first year. He will = outline how to participate in the Atlas, including how to submit = observations in the form of specimens and photographs. Atlas kits, = including a net and other necessary equipment, will be provided to those = who want to participate.
