Our first White-crowned Sparrow of the spring migration arrived this afternoon in the "glade", north of our house. The "glade" is a forest floor where I toss seed every morning from our kitchen window. The ground foragers much prefer turning over leaves and mucking about in the debris of this forest floor to visiting neatly laid out feeding platforms. The "glade" is very difficult to see except from our kitchen window or rear deck.

There was another sparrow present with two thin pale white wing bars, pale greyish bill, no apparent facial markings, mostly clear breast and sporting a long tail, and generally large overall for a sparrow. I didn't see a yellow forecrown but my look was short. It's possibly a first winter bird that hasn't developed it's breeding plumage yet, but I won't jump to any conclusions. I'll keep my eye out for this bird.

Hans
