I haven't seen the hummingbird since Friday morning. At that time it was on the feeder in the honeysuckle vine by the doorsteps. It was trying to chase off an American goldfinch or maybe the goldfinch was trying to chase off the hummingbird. I didn't have time to see. I did think it was not looking good so opened the big window into the greenhouse thinking it might need warmth. No sign of it being trapped in there. About the same time another set to between two chickadees and a swallow over the house on the pole by the barn. No sign since of activity there either. We do have a couple female or juvenile Purple finches (eyes look good and clean) and a male at different times at the feeder. Grackles and Blue jays going with lots of building material. Many robins and sparrows (Song and White throats). Had a Hairy woodpecker hit the greenhouse awhile ago, hard, and was stunned awhile. I didn't intervene. It was looking quite alert last I saw. Mourning doves everywhere. Starling presence and numbers are dropping, thankfully. There is a Nuthatch, white-bellied, in the maple tree most days. I haven't seen them in the past couple days but I hear the Northern Flickers. Had a chipmunk again this morning. Not regular these days sadly. Chased a big and beautiful cat from the yard this am and am thinking of live trapping it. It does its business in my gardens, greenhouse and barn. Wonder what trouble that will bring. It really is a nice (and friendly) cat and I am a cat person but there are limits, aren't there? Marg Millard, White Point, Queens http://MargMillard.ca
