Our berberis bushes often keep most berries through the winter but in very early spring the robbins usually clear them quickly. Over the years we have seen grouse, brown thrasher and hermit thrush eating the berries.

  Dennis, it sounds like your ornamental shrub is a barberry not a boxwood.  I have never seen birds eating the berries off of my many barberries.  Perhaps they are too bitter or just an acquired taste?
