Hi all
Rick Ferguson, Chralie Kendell and I ran our second owl route tonight, April 13. The owl route (# 4) runs from Lorne- Sheepherders Junction and toward Landsdowne ( Pictou Co). It was a prime night for the survey with clear starlit skies and the temp from 0 to -2C. This had the effect to keep frog noise to a minimum. We had owls at 9 of 10 stops with a total of 13 Barred Owls, 7 Great-Horned Owls and 1 Saw-whet Owl. I think this is the most owls we ever had on a survey route and pretty amazing when one considers the clear-cuts and active logging on the route and quite a contrast to the Sunnybrae-Caledonia route where we only had a single Saw-whet as the only owl.
We also had 3 Snipe and 3 Woodcock. Peepers were on the first 7 stops , but likely too cool for the last few stops. We only had a handful of Wood frogs. On the way in town we saw a racoon, 2 cats and a kitten along the side of the road.
cheers
ken
