Index of Subjects
Index of Subjects I went for a walk after work this evening in Shubie Park in Dartmouth. This is a woodland park connecting lakes Micmac and Charles, and a stretch of the Shubenacadie Canal passes through it. Lots of trails, dog walkers, joggers etc. I used to visit this park regularly, but less so in the last couple of years. The Beaked Hazelnut (Corylus cornuta) was in bloom, with tiny magenta female flowers and lengthened male catkins. I saw the first Dandelions of the year in bloom as well. The large, purple-tinged flower buds of Red-berried Elder (Sambucus pubens) are prominent right now. It was a lovely evening to stroll around, listening to the birds; I heard (and later saw) my first Hermit Thrush of the year. Other birds singing were Robins, Purple Finches, Mourning Doves, American Goldfinches, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Black-capped Chickadees. There was a surprising absence of sparrows and blackbirds. Although some individuals of various species have arrived, I think the main movement of Grackles, Red-winged Blackbirds, and White-throated Sparrows, for instance, is still to come. Cheers, Patricia L. Chalmers Halifax
