Hi all
Tried a hand at atlassing in the wind Sunday, Apr. 11. Got a late start and missed the dawn chorus. Goal was to check out some of the under-atlassed north-western Guysborough squares. My route ran from Plymouth-Bridgeville- Sunnybrae-Caledonia- Glenelg-and to the Lead Mine road just south of the Liscomb River-Seloams L-Trafalgar Rd- Hopewell to home.
The area was somewhat quiet and the exercise became mostly a scouting of roads for future atlassing visits. However, I did come up with a few returning migrants. At Bridgeville, I had singing EASTERN PHOEBES near 2 diffferent bridges. In the Battery L. square I noted an AMERICAN KESTREL in suitable habitat. I had a quick daylight look of the area near Caledonia where we had the Saw-whet Owl calling on our BBS route, but I did not come up with a nest hole.
Caledonia- Smithfield was finch-rich. with Evening Grosbeaks, Purple Finches, and Pine Siskins with the usual Goldfinches. A male White-winged Crossbill was near the Lower Caledonia bridge.En route through this area, I had 2 WINTER WRENS, 1 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 4 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, 12 FLICKERS and a pair of American Kestrels. I noted Mayflowers had joined the Colstfoot in bloom along the road shoulders and trails.
It was hard to come up with much in the Liscomb River area- 2m. Ring-necked Ducks and one Lake and 5 Common Mergansers on another. Near Honeymoon Bog in the north end of the Sanctuary. I observed a pair of courting OSPREY
cheers
Ken
