Yesterday a single red-breasted nuthatch appeared at the feeders. Still no purple finches at all, and only occasional goldfinches in very small numbers, although elsewhere in town and out and about I am hearing their notes and songs elsewhere. At the Noggins/Greenwich bald eagle nest, Randall Bishop's Webcam camera is conspicuous, up very high in the next tree to the right and very close, BUT still I cannot see the head of an adult eagle in the nest in incubating position -- perhaps one is there but just not visible from the side (from my Highway 1 viewing spot) -- I should call the Bishop home to find out what's going on there. Canard Pond: 5 n. shovelers (2 m,f prs + 1m), 4 Am. wigeons (2 m,f prs), about 10 green-winged teals, 10+ black ducks, 2 mallards, and about 50 gulls (mostly herring, rest great black-backed). Canning Aboiteau: 70+ Canada geese, 10 green-winged teals, 4 black ducks. Harris' Pond in Canning: 8 ring-necked ducks (4 m,f prs?), 5 Am. wigeons (2 m,f prs + 1m), a chorus of singing red-winged blackbirds and c. grackles + starlings in trees (not in cattails yet), 7-8 painted turtles basking, no frogs calling. Back in east Wolfville off Olsen Ave. I checked out a residential small cattail pond & associated stream/seep, where there were lots of singing and chirping goldfinches etc. Along Wolfville's Oak Avenue, Jean Timpa's Daphne bushes are at their peak of flowering, with perhaps 15-20 stems and lots of gorgeous pink colour; also there were many hundreds more of flower-heads of coltsfoot than on my last visit of just a few days ago.
