Dear all, I still think the jury is out on how much female purple  
finches actually sing, and whether it is just on the nest that they  
sing (from my memory of our exchange of comments some months ago).   
In any case, I think Richard was appropriately careful with his  
wording below about the female/immature brown-plumaged individuals  
that were singing.  I do love the purple finch song, but have not  
heard one (nor even seen one) this year yet.
