Two males disappeared in the middle of last week - possibly just natural departure, with the warmer weather. The 7 that remain are tucking into the mealworms etc. with enthusiasm, in the present return to colder conditions. There are 4 bright males, 2 pale females and one brighter female remaining. Last year the oriole numbers also decreased in late March, but the bulk of the flock left all within one week, the last week of April. This was when insects had emerged and the orioles were able to feed themselves. The Orange-crowned Warbler that overwintered at Dominique Legrand's feeders last year left earlier than the orioles, but I don't have a record of that date. Cheers, Susann Myers ----- Original Message ----- From: Gayle MacLean To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Sent: Saturday, March 27, 2010 3:36 PM Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Juncos There was a small flock of the juncos here today, as well as about 15 - 20 Cedar Waxwings. Haven't seen Juncos since last Fall. Lots of birds here today. Several pairs of both Hairy & Downy Woodpeckers, a Northern Flicker, Grackles, Chickadees, Song, White-throated & House Sparrows, alot of American Goldfinches, some of the males very brightly coloured, 1 Northern Cardinal, Mourning Doves, crows, pigeons & starlings and the over-wintering Orange-crowned Warbler is still here too, enjoying the mealworms! Have not seen the Sharp-shinned Hawk/Merlin for some time now. How are all the other rarities that over-wintered? The Baltimore Orioles, the other OC Warbler in Lr. Sackville, the Spotted Towhee, are they all still present? Know the Mockingbird is still here.
