Any orange marking seen would probably nail it down to NOT a painted =20
turtle but very probably a RED-EARED SLIDER or RED-EARED TURTLE, a =20
formerly commonly sold pet-store item (tiny green babies) butr a =20
species that belongs further south in the eastern U.S. Releases of =20
former pet turtles are of course illegal but difficult to enforce, =20
and such is thought to be also important for our native WOOD TURTLE, =20
so that where they turn up does not necessarily reflect their natural =20=

range. Thanks for your reports, Gayle, and hopefully now more people =20=

will be on the lookout for more of the alien red-eared sliders -- =20
look them up in the field guides or on the Internet.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
