This week I noticed the return of House Finches to the Conrose
Field/ Waegwoltic Avenue area of south end Halifax. They are usually
here year-round, but most disappeared late last fall and have been
scarce all winter. A few days ago I saw a flock of six; today
there was lots of singing as I walked to work. I also heard the male
Northern Cardinal singing, and a White-breasted Nuthatch.

The over-wintering Song Sparrows here in Halifax have been singing,
off and on, in appropriate habitat since late January. I think more
than usual stayed, and there is certainly a lot of song here in the
mornings now. I was interested to read Billy Digout's and James
Hirtle's reports suggesting that they have detected movements of Song
Sparrows this week. That seems early, doesn't it?

	Cheers,

	Patricia L. Chalmers
	Halifax
