This week I noticed the return of House Finches to the Conrose Field/ Waegwoltic Avenue area of south end Halifax. They are usually here year-round, but most disappeared late last fall and have been scarce all winter. A few days ago I saw a flock of six; today there was lots of singing as I walked to work. I also heard the male Northern Cardinal singing, and a White-breasted Nuthatch. The over-wintering Song Sparrows here in Halifax have been singing, off and on, in appropriate habitat since late January. I think more than usual stayed, and there is certainly a lot of song here in the mornings now. I was interested to read Billy Digout's and James Hirtle's reports suggesting that they have detected movements of Song Sparrows this week. That seems early, doesn't it? Cheers, Patricia L.
