Thanks for the support!
I'm on Halifax peninsula, so there's less suitable habitat here for hawks than at Fred Grieg's. There has been one Merlin patrolling the neighbourhood this winter, and I suspect it of having taken the oriole that I lost in mid-January, which was the brightest male. But I'm fortunate here in having inherited some good brushy tangles - the result of shrubs having been planted years ago along fence lines. I've tucked the orioles' feeding cage into one of these tangles, made up mainly of forsythia and thorny multiflora rose, so that the orioles don't have to leave cover to get to food. They spend most of the day in this brushy tangle, popping occasionally into the feeding cage for grapes & suet.
Last year I saw a Merlin swoop through the yard - all the House Sparrows and other birds dove for the brush and were safe. I didn't see the Merlin again - no good hunting. It really shows the value of untidy tangles, for the birds.
Good news from Helene Van Doninck - oriole number 9 is fully recovered and ready to come "home". I'm picking him up tomorrow morning. Can hardly wait!

This is great news!! I do appreciate the amount of time and effort you have put in to helping these birds survive the winter!! Good for you, and for the Orioles!!
I am guessing that you don't have a "problem" with small raptors, like Sharpies, in your neighborhood. It must be nearly 10 years ago when there was a similar large number of Orioles, including a Bullocks, around Fred Greig's place in Jollimore. Gradually, as winter progressed, the number of birds decreased in number until perhaps one or two was left by March. First to disappear were the most brightly coloured males; the general consensus at the time was that they were being taken by one or more Sharp-shinned Hawks.

The 8 Baltimore Orioles in my yard in Halifax are still doing well. All made it through yesterday's storm and were desperate for mealworms this morning. They have begun to sing a few notes, and to show small patches of black feathers on their heads and necks. As of a week ago, the one recovering from an injury at Helene Van Doninck's was also doing well. So of the 10 that were here in early January, 9 have survived to this point, thanks to this mild winter.
