I had a little too much work to do today to head down to the valley this we=
ekend, so I thought I'd spend an hour this morning checking out a smaller e=
agle congregation site in Shubenacadie. Moxsom Meats (off the connector bet=
ween the #14 and #2 highways) puts out some kind of offal on a regular basi=
s, and the eagles and ravens are happy to take advantage.=0A=0AI made a con=
servative count of 36 eagles, mostly young birds, but about 7 adults were p=
resent.=0A=0AEagles and ravens both were noisy, and there were several acro=
batic chases involving birds which had gotten hold of a particularly tasty =
morsel. I was surprised to see a banded adult eagle, though it was much too=
far away to read the number, not to mention the fact that it kept its feat=
hers fluffed over its feet most of the time. =0A=0AOne juvenile eagle looke=
d to be in rough shape - its plumage was ruffled, and its flight feathers w=
ere worn and some broken, as though it had spent a lot of time on the groun=
d. It flew pretty strongly however, and successfully defended its meal from=
several other eagles. Perhaps it is recovering from an illness or injury. =
I wasn't the only one who thought it looked out of sorts, though - one rave=
n persistently snuck up behind the eagle to tweak its tail, dancing aside w=
henever the eagle whipped around to face it. I could almost hear the raven =
snickering. It's the first time I've actually seen a raven do this kind of =
behaviour, though I've heard about it many times. =0A=0AI brought my camer=
a and got lots of pictures, though my batteries died so I didn't get to dow=
nload or review them yet. I'll post some later this week.=0A=0AThere were a=
lso three tree sparrows and a savannah sparrow picking at grit on the roads=
ide.=0A=0ABack at home, I was greeted by the sound of drumming and calling =
from two pileated woodpeckers. =0A=0AKathleen MacAulay=0AMilford Station=0A=
