Yesterday afternoon I was surprised to see a Hermit Thrush poking around in the leaf litter in my backyard. This is the first I've seen this bird this winter. It was pretty fluffed up in the chill, but was active and appeared to be in good health. I got a few pictures of it, although the quality is low since they were shot at a distance through a dirty window.

I also paid a visit to the pond which last winter had so many Ring-necked Ducks in it (I believe it's part of Three Mile Lake, between Fall River and Lower Sackville). A pair of Hooded Mergansers were keeping company with about a dozen mallards and black ducks. I'll be checking this pond frequently, since it's on my way to school. There was one Ring-necked Duck on it two weeks ago, but as I recall, last year there weren't any there until February.
