Harold, I think you should tell Paul that both the bobcat and lynx
have black on the end of the tail -- a good look is necessary to see
if the terminal black on top of the tail goes also to the bottom side
of the tail tip -- if yes, it's a lynx, which is highly unlikely here
in the Valley -- also the Bobcat shows other dark bands on top of the
tail. Both species have ear tufts, which are much longer in lynx
than in bobcat.

I believe that lynx occurs in Nova Scotia almost entirely in Cape
Breton and especially in the Highlands of C.B. Sometimes in very
snowy winters when snowshoe hares are not plentiful, lynx can spread
out of the Highlands to other parts of Cape Breton and to the
northern Mainland. I stand to be corrected on this, and I am
forwarding to some experts, namely Fred Scott of Acadia Biology
Museum (formerly curator of mammals and birds at N.S. Museum, and
several biologists in the Wildlife Division (Kentville) of the N.S.
Dept. of Nat. Resources (formerly Lands and Forests).

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
