Hi Marg

" This is where I am getting very confused. I have three birds
that can be either Chipping, (I am pretty sure 2 are), and a third that may
 be a Clay coloured."

Take a look at the photos of the Chipping/Clay-coloured sparrows. The
quickest "easy" way to clinch the ID is to check the "Lores" (the partof the
face between the eye and bill) if they're dark as to compleat an eyline
through the eye to the bill then the bird is a Chipping Sp. If the lors are
pale and give the bird an open face look then it's a Clay-coloured Sp. This
is in my mind the best feild mark to look for untill you get use to the
other more suttle differences.

Hope this helps
Tom K.
