--Boundary_(ID_a92anlF8dIHolPsga34KJQ) Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT DEC. 17, 2009 - Yesterday temperatures in Wolfville plummeted from several degrees above 0 C. down to about -8 C. or so with strong winds and miserable wind-chills. Today is even worse, with temp. about -12 C. and still very strong wind from the west. The cold plus a nice slight dump of a skiff of powdery snow overnight just might improve the prospects for birds at feeders and along roads for the Dec. 19 Wolfville Christmas Bird Count. I only hope for a bit less wind on our Count Day. Tonight at 8:55 p.m. I was walking in downtown Wolfville near the town wharf, when I heard the loud honking of at least a few CANADA GEESE flying over at low elevation, but of course I couldn't tell how many. Anyway, today is part of the Count Week for Saturday's Wolfville Christmas Bird Count. Eric & Anne Mills on Brier Island saw some Canada geese on Sunday and Monday but not on the Brier Island Count Day Tuesday. A few of my own Brier Island highlights on Tuesday included a ruby-crowned kinglet (& maybe a second one), an unidentified warbler with yellow underparts (not a yellow-rumped nor palm, maybe orange-crowned or Nashville?)(not seen well), about a dozen c. grackles, about 20 cowbirds, 1 red-winged blackbird (Westport town always has a mixed flock of blackbirds in winter), and 100+ harbour seals hauled out on rocks at low tide west of Northern Light (Eric Mills reported just harbour seals at Pond Cove with no grey seals).
