Grand Pre. This afternoon they were again there, but several hundred metres to the west, at the west end of the green-grass fields and east of the road south from the T-junction. I was able to show the cranes to two fellows from Kentville who had no binoculars. DEC. 6, 2009 - We had our first snowfall of the year this morning -- only a few centimetres on the ground by early afternoon. Responding to my late setting out of the feeders were 8 DIFFERENT CARDINALS (4m, 4f), along with 6 chickadees, 4 blue jays, a pheasant, a mourning dove, a downy woodpecker, 2 white-throated sparrows, a white-breasted nuthatch (which we see only occasionally), and a nice surprise very briefly -- a red-breasted nuthatch -- I hope it will stay in the neighborhood for a while. Coincidentally, the Thextons in east Wolfville had 5 cardinals at their feeders, feeding at least partly on cracked corn on the ground. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville Jim (James W.)
