BERNARD FORSYTHE effectively began his GREEN Winter-Bird list today (Dec
1st), by WALKING from his home to Grand Pre, to find the Sandhill Cranes on
Long Is. He had an impressive list of 32 species, some of which will be of
interest in Blake's list of 'Winter Birds of Nova Scotia'.

His sightings include:

Sandhill Cranes (2) (still in same area)
Gt. Blue Heron (1)
Lsr. Blk-back. Gull (1)
Iceland Gull (1) (Wolfville sewage ponds)
Other gulls included Ring-bills, HEGUs and GBBGs
Merlin
Mockingbird (same area as before)
Am Tree Sparrow (1)(along railway tracks)
White-thr. Sparrow (2) (along railway tracks)
Song Sparrows (12) He found sparrows were scarce.
Snow Buntings (a flock of 15 and another distant flock heard)
Red-w. Blackbird (a flock of 50+ along the railway tracks)
N Flicker.

The water in the Minas Basin was too rough to try for seabirds, and he did
not locate the Snowy Owl.

Cheers,
Judy Tufts
