Having just read the fabulous announcement below, I am compelled to =20
share it with all of you, with some apologies to the deniers among =20
us. I heard on the radio today that Barack Obama will be going to =20
Copenhagen, and maybe this will change Stephen Harper's mind about =20
not going. Also both David Suzuki and Al Gore were on CBC Radio's =20
"Q" show this morning -- I believe it is also re-broadcast in the =20
evening at 10 p.m.?? Or the broadcast is probably available via the =20
cbc.ca/Q Web site??

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville

Members of Parliament Vote in favor of More Ambitious Action at the =20
United Nations Climate Summit

November 24, 2009

For Immediate Release

(Ottawa) Canadian parliament has sent an unambiguous message that =20
they do not agree with the current minority federal government's =20
climate change strategy. In a vote today on a Bloc Quebecois motion =20
to take a more ambitious position going into the United Nations =20
Climate Summit in Copenhagen in less than two weeks, the three =20
opposition parties voted in favor of the motion, with a count of 137 =20
to 124.

This result comes less than a week after the release of polling that =20
shows that over 75% of Canadians are embarrassed by the current =20
government=92s lack of leadership on climate change.

"The federal government needs to take this motion into account if it =20
is going to maintain that it is representing Canadians," says Graham =20
Saul of Climate Action Network Canada. "The majority of the house of =20
commons believe that we need to take stronger action on climate =20
change, which is in line with the majority of Canadians who feel the =20
same way."

The Bloc motion recommends that Canada go to Copenhagen with a =20
position that encompasses three points as follows:

1. A 25% reduction domestically in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 =20
based on 1990 levels

2. The need to limit the rise in average global temperatures to below =20=

2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels

3. Support for developing countries in their efforts to adapt to =20
climate change and to reduce their own greenhouse gas emissions

These three points, if adopted as the mandate for the current =20
government=92s negotiating position, would significantly change the =20
global perception of Canada as a spoiler and a laggard going into =20
these critical talks.

"With only weeks to go, this is a symbolic decision that reminds the =20
world that there is leadership in Canada, and that the majority of =20
our members of parliament understand the urgency of the upcoming =20
climate summit," says Steven Guilbeault of Equiterre. "We have to =20
remind our current government that it is their job to represent us, =20
they have an obligation to listen. A fair, ambitious and binding deal =20=

is possible in Copenhagen, we just need our government to show the =20
political will."

All eyes will be on Copenhagen from the 7th - 18th of December as =20
over 60 heads of state gather in Copenhagen to push for a deal.

As of today Prime Minister Harper has stated that he will not be =20
attending the negotiations.
