The GBHs still around could either be "stupid" youngsters that just are hanging around longer than they perhaps should, OR some or many might be young birds that have engaged in post-breeding dispersal in all directions. This is fairly widespread in birds but especially known for herons and egrets for a long time. And the ones that end up north of their regular ranges are conspicuous, while it's difficult to tell which of the great blues are from further south.
