I was curious as to why the adults were picking up these items since it =
didn't seem to make a lot of sense unless they were mistaking the =
plastic for other things. There was a suggestion put forth by an =
albatross researcher Dr. Lindsay Young, whose interview was recently =
aired on radio that apparently the adults target these items floating at =
the surface because they often have flying fish larvae attached to them. =
Bits and pieces of wood are also ingested for the same reason. Squid =
beaks are another item that also accumulates in the gut. I would assume =
the adults regurgitate what isn't readily digestible. =
http://www.cbc.ca/quirks/archives/09-10/qq-2009-11-07.html Check out =
the interview on Quirks and Quarks or if you are near a radio, that show =
is being broadcast right now - 3 PM.
