Hi all
I made a quick check Sunday afternoon, Oct. 25 to see if there were any concentrations of birds in some of the harbours ( Caribou, Chance) of Pictou Co. Although there were 50-100 Bonaparte's Gulls and Red-breasted Mergansers in several locations, I did not note large concentrations anywhere.
There were 90 Red-throated Loons at the NE end of Waterside PP. All were in winter plumage with no sign of the red throat. Also at Waterside were 10 Sanderlings 250 Canada Geese and 3 Great Blue Heron.
There were 60 Gannets feeding just east of the Caribou I. lighthouse. On the point were 3 Sanderlings and 2 Semipalmated Plovers. About 100 Double-crested Cormorants headed west around the point about 4:30 likely heading to Amet I.
Along Pictou Causeway and Middle River dyke there were 250 Greater Scaup and 50 Common Mergansers. There were 10 Hooded Mergansers in the roadside pond in the Abercrombie Management area near the Granton turn-off and another 40 or so at the Haliburton Gut.
A good number of DC Cormorants are still lingering at the posts along the Pictou Causeway.
I saw Cedar Waxwings ( 3 flocks at least 30 birds each) and Robins at several locations- Lighthouse Beach, Pictou Landing and at Waterside PP
A Lincolns Sparrow was travelling with a Song Sparrow just off the trail behind Sobeys Head office on Stellarton Rd.
I heard a Spring Peeper calling from a pond near the end of Chance Harbour Rd. near the MacLennan Camp and a possible Wood Frog calling along the road out to Caribou I.
There were loads of biting mosquitoes along the shore at Caribou I. and a Cabbage White butterfly as well, quite worn looking.
The leaves are still in fine form in Pictou Co. despite taking a beating in Sunday mornings wind. Sunday afternoon was warm, near 20C and a beautiful afternoon to enjoy autumn scenery.
cheers
ken
