 I didn't get a good look at the beast, and it could have been a seal, BUT the behaviour was porpoise-like: No lolling about the surface, but rapid breaking and diving, with no acrobatics.

Eel Lake is not fresh, but brackish.  At very high tides, the sea flows into the lake.  (We're at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy down here!)
