Some of you may remember that I reported a banded song sparrow in my yard in spring 2008 and again in 2009. I was determined to get the band number this year so I could report it to the bird banding lab. I spent a great deal of time lurking around my front window, ready to snap pictures with a telephoto whenever the banded bird came into view at the feeders. After well over 300 photos (thank goodness for digital cameras!), I was able to reconstruct the band number, with a little help from Lance Laviolette. This morning my certificate of appreciation arrived from the BBL with a bit of information about where and when the bird was banded.

Turns out this sparrow was banded as a hatch year bird on Bon Portage Island in October 2003. That makes it nearly six years old when I encountered it in April - not bad for a little sparrow! Checking the BBL's longevity records, the oldest wild song sparrow ever found was over eleven years old, with other species such as Lincoln's and swamp sparrows coming in at around five to seven years.

You can see a photo collage showing the band number - 1711-06564 - on my Flickr account here, and a shot of the bird itself here.
