Hi all
Here is a beleated report from Thurs. evening Oct. 8. After work I made a quick trip to Big I., Pictou Co. There had been strong sustained winds from the NE and I wanted to check for seabirds. Below the dunes and along the breaking waves along the Nothumberland Shore, I noted 3 Storm Petrels. My feeling was Wilson's Storm Petrels with a complete white rump and square tail and rounded wings.
A little further west along the causeway, I put up a group of gulls when I walked on to the beach and shortly after I noted 2 Jaegers flying east. I am not sure if they had been on the shore with the gulls or not. They caught me by surprise and I did not get a good enough look for a positive ID. My feeling was the more slim and streamlined Jaeger rather than the more bulky Pom. The two were flying together and were out of sight in no time.
There were intermittant heavy rain showers in the 40 min. or so I was there and the sun was setting. I was not the only person there as there were several waterfowl hunters. I was somewhat taken back by a trio of well camoflaged hunters in the salt marsh at 6:50 and I wondered to myself just what were the hours for hunting since is was getting rather dark.
cheers
ken
