SEPT. 26, 2009 - A bright adult male N. CARDINAL was at the feeder
today, and near him but not being attended by him were two juvenile
cardinals, a male and female.

SEPT. 27, 2009 - At the Deep Roots Festival, I talked with a couple
from Kentville's Pleasant St. near where Richard Stern used to live.
The man told me he had good numbers of HOUSE FINCHES recently,
including yellow and orange variants of the male plumage. They also
had numbers of PURPLE FINCHES, and it was nice to be able to compare
the two species. He told me that currently they have only immatures
or females of house finches. This is the same man and property where
there was an overwintering CAROLINA WREN two winters ago. This man
and his wife spend the summers in Smith's Cove, where they have a
cottage, and winters in Kentville.

SEPT. 28, 2009 - This morning below my feeders were 2 white-throated
sparrows (my first for this Autumn), a chipmunk again (second
sighting), at least 4 n. cardinals (all in different plumages, and at
least 3 juveniles), a flicker, 6+ blue jays, 4 crows, 3 mourning
doves, 3 song sparrows. A couple of days ago I had a single c.
grackle but haven't seen it since. The d... blue jays have been
emptying my plastic hanging tubular feeder of bl.-oil sunflower seeds
every day, but I'm hoping they spill a lot of them onto the ground
for the other birds and chipmunk?

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
