SEPT. 22, 2009 - In late afternoon our Wolfville feeders had 4
juvenile N. CARDINALS, perhaps a brood? -- one was clearly a young
male, a mixture of bright red and brownish, then another separate
male with much less red, and the other two were dull-coloured
females, all three of them with non-pink bills (darkish but
lightening). Also present were 4 blue jays, 3 mourning doves, and a
song sparrow (and earlier a cock pheasant and 2 crows).

Sherman Williams sent NatureNS and BNS naturalists an alert about a
nice high pass tonight of the International Space Station which was
to peak at 8:11 p.m. The sky cooperated and the ISS showed up right
on time and was very visible and bright as it traveled toward the
southeast for quite a long time and then disappeared in the Earth's
shadow.

SEPT. 23, 2009 - This morning another N. CARDINAL showed up at my
Wolfville feeders; this one looks like a juvenile female but has a
pink bill and thus is older than the other 4 cardinals seen yesterday.

SEPT. 24, 2009 - This morning at home in Wolfville a small (male)
immature SHARP-SHINNED HAWK showed up, landed twice on a deck
railing, and was promptly chased away twice by clearly unafraid blue
jays. Also visible at the time were 2 N. FLICKERS, a ROBIN, etc.

Yet ANOTHER CARDINAL appeared in late afternoon, this one in male
plumage with a pink bill but too dull to be an adult -- maybe a
yearling or one that fledged in early summer? This makes a total of
SIX DIFFERENT CARDINALS seen over the past three days, and at least
five of them were juveniles.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
