Yesterday (Sept. 5) Martine and I hit the biking trails once
again. We chose the Atlantic View Trail, the former section of
rail-trail that has been upgraded by the Cole Harbour Trails and Rec
Association.

We started at the trail's western terminus, off the West Lawrencetown
Road (this is also the eastern terminus of the Salt Marsh
Trail). We cycled the length of the trail, which ends 10 km east at
Causeway Road, which leads to the Fisherman's Preserve at Three Fathom Harbour.

At this terminus the old rail bed continues to the east, and is
called the Blueberry Run, but no work has been done on this stretch,
and we gave up on it after less than 1 km -- the trail was too narrow
and rough.

The Atlantic View Trail is a great birding trail, as it passes
through an excellent variety of habitats, including West Marsh,
Lawrencetown Lake, Porter's Lake, Rocky Run, the marsh beside the
start of the Causeway Road, and plenty of forest. We tallied around
50 bird species during casual birding, nothing very notable, perhaps
because the tide was high (very few shorebirds). There were plenty
of wildflowers, as well as numerous dragonflies and butterflies which
I did not stop to identify.

I cannot recommend this trail too highly.

Cheers,

Blake
