AUGUST 20, 2009 - I was at Wolfville Harbour about an hour before the
high, high tide (New Moon today)(tide high at 1:21 p.m. -- I was
there at about 12:45). Roosting SHOREBIRDS along the railroad tracks
were all PEEPS, about 40 of them, probably mostly least sandpipers
(see Aug. 21).

In late afternoon, I was on our back deck in Wolfville and heard some
bird calls. I stood up and pished loudly, and a GRAY CATBIRD quickly
responded by flying out of our back hedge and coming straight toward
me. It didn't waver from that path until it got within a few metres
of me, whereupon it slowed down, landed briefly just in front of me,
then flew a short distance and proceeded to give several of its cat-
like mew calls. Then it flew back to where it came from, but a
couple of vocal BLUE JAYS chased it repeatedly, for some reason.

In our yard there were also Am. goldfinches and yellow warblers. For
the past 10 days locally I have been hearing and seeing goldfinches
everywhere I've been.

AUGUST 21, 2009 - Today's high, high tide time was 2:15 p.m. I went
to ne. Grand Pre to THE GUZZLE to check for flying and roosting
flocks of SHOREBIRDS at 12:30 p.m. From the north end of the main
north-south dyke I saw a HUGE FLYING FLOCK of PEEPS (5000+) to the
west, just to the west of Jean Merks' house. With binoculars I
could also see that they were temporarily roosting on a small area of
beach that was rapidly disappearing (high high tide nearly). I
quickly drove over there and walked to where I could see the roosting
birds, which in their migratory and post-feeding restlessness were
frequently taking off, wheeling around in aerobatic flights, and then
coming back to land on the beach and on the big boulders that were
there to minimize shore erosion. A large contingent of the peeps
flew away to the east and disappeared from view, but several hundred
peeps were left there for me to look at. They were nearly all
SEMIPALMATED (no hyphen) SANDPIPERS, with at least 2 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS and 2 SEMIPALMATED (no hyphen) PLOVERS.

At Wolfville Harbour at 1:30 p.m. (nearly high tide), along the
railroad tracks trying to rest were 5 YELLOWLEGS (most or all
GREATERS) and about 25+ PEEPS -- 24+ LEAST SANDPIPERS and 1
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
