Many thanks to all who have responded to my queries. If my visual =
memory is correct, the dead Jack Pines appear to be the largest/oldest =
individuals, and possibly those on the highest/driest ground in the =
barrens along Upper Five Bridge Lake. They may have been killed during a =
dry spell during the last five years.=20
One shouldn't forget the role of periodic fire in the barren (or =
"fire barren," according to older maps) environment. This has been =
suppressed here over the last few decades. Perhaps the Jack Pines have =
grown too large over the years and cannot obtain enough water from the =
barren ground to support themselves during hot summers.
