According to the Birds of North American (online), young blue jays loose
all
their head feathers (capital tracts) at once during their first basic
plumage molt, resulting in baldness for about one week.

Subject: [NatureNS] bald Blue Jay

A short while ago, I saw something I couldn't identify on the feeder. It
was

scaring away the fresh young sparrows newly brought out and Momma
Sparrow
was holding forth very vocally as well as spitting at it. The bird,
definitely a Blue Jay, was very strange looking. It is bald from the
shoulders up. I ran for the camera and in the meantime a few Grackles
and a
Brown headed cowbird came in and displaced the Jay. There is something
else
about the colouring that I can't quite grasp. Maybe it is bald
elsewhere.......I am not sure. A very strange looking creature indeed.
I
didn't see gooey eyes or sores, but that viewing was very short. It
might be

back. Has anyone else seen it in this area?
