I received a phone call from my friend David Walmark this morning to let me=
 know he had seen 30 ruddy turnstones and two whimbrels at Hell's Point. H=
e had described a bird at Hirtle's Beach the other day=2C which I determine=
d was a phalarope. A great horned owl was also seen at Hell's Point. =20

I started shorebird surveys at Hell's Point last year in Kingsburg and ther=
efore=2C went with David back out there this evening. My survey was interu=
pted by a merlin swooping in=2C but before then I was able to see: Willets=
 5=2C ruddy turnstones 40=2C red-necked phalarope 5=2C red phalarope 3=2C g=
reater yellowlegs 4=2C lesser yellowlegs 2=2C Black-bellied Plover 5=2C Sho=
rt-billed dowitcher 7=2C Stilt sandpiper 1=2C Semi-palmated sandpiper 5 and=
 spotted sandpiper 1. The phalaropes were swimming inside a channel on the=
 shoreline about thirty feet from where David and I stood and allowed for e=
asy observation. I also saw 10 red phalaropes in flight offshore. This is=
 the best look I've ever had of phalaropes here and the easist and longest=
 I've had to study them.
