Hi Gayle
I also enjoyed the walk. it was a pleasure to have both of you along.
After you left I took the canoe and went to pond 1 to examine the Grebe nes=

Four nests were empty and as there was 3 broods in the area ( 1, 3, and 6 y=
oung ) I presume these nests were successful.
The other 4 nests had eggs in them. One nest had 2=A0 pure white eggs that =
looked as if they were never brooded but the water had come up and they wer=
e partially under water. so the heavy rains may have been a factor.
The other nests had stained dark olive or nearly black eggs that looked as =
if they had been brooded for some time but prehaps had failed to hatch. Wat=
er was up around them also. There was 1, 4, and =A08 eggs in these nests. O=
ne nest - the 4 had a few stems of milfoil over the eggs.
The nests were all constructed of water milfoil in about 1 meter of water. =
Unfortunately I forgot to measure the depth of the water with a ruler but w=
ent by the depth on the paddle. The grebes had twisted the mifloil together=
to make a frail platform and added a few pieces to the top. It was anchore=
d with the milfoil roots but didn't have much up and down movement so if th=
e water level went up - bad things could happen.
One nest had the head and skeleton of a hooded merganser included in the co=
nstruction. Presumable the skeleton had been at the bottom of the pond and =
the grebes had brought it up. An eagle was flying around but as the nests w=
ere deserted and the eggs were in the open, it showed no interest in feedin=
g on them.
An interesting day.
Please feel free to post this on Nature NS if you would like.
Hope to see you and Becky again.
Paul
