Hi Everyone;

I ran my BBS route last Wednesday, Walden - North and West of Mahone Bay.

My best bird, at my new stop #1 was a Long-Eared Owl!  I heard it as I got out of the car at 4:45, but then it didn't call again as I was getting set up.  BBS rules are quite strict.  I couldn't count it if it didn't call during the 3 minute window.  Two and a half minutes into the listening period it gave a long Whoooo, then a few seconds later, another long Whooooo,  as it flew in a southerly direction along Spondo Lake off the Clearland Road.

At my new stop #2 I had a Barred and a Saw-Whet Owl.  I love these two new stops!

As Blake and James have said, some birds were down this year.  Total number of swallows were down, warblers were down, particularly Magnolias!  I also didn't get a Black-throated Blue this year, nor a Canada.

For the first time on this route I got not one but two Eastern Phoebes!  The first one sang then just to be sure I noticed him, he flew up on a wire and sang right at me.  This was over the bridge on the stretch of road that runs between Lake William and Lake Peter.  The second one was by the bridge on Highway #10, near Wheelock Falls, northwest of New Germany.  There seems to be an ATV trail running parallel to the highway about 50 meters in.  Maybe a Rails to Trails??  I didn't have time to investigate, but the Phoebe may be nesting under the bridge that this trail fords.

I also had a Rusty Blackbird - another first.  I'm pleased to say that Bobolinks on my route were up.  Even though they weren't at one of the two spots where I always got them before, they popped up in two new spots this year.

Cheers;
Suzanne
